Spring Dance Concert

The Ohio University School of Dance will present its annual Spring Concert on May 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Shirley Wimmer Dance Theater in Putnam Hall. The concert will feature works from guest artists, faculty and students.

This year’s venue will showcase works by guest artist Lisa Lock, Assistant Professor of Theater Rebecca VerNooy, Professor of Dance Mickie Geller, and student work which was selected previously by adjudication.

Lock will present a fiery duet of raw emotions and fear of loss and a group piece, for five women, that explores the dancers’ individuality and the power and strength of femininity. Lock is the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and a Lester Horton Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. In Cleveland, where she currently resides, she has set works on the former Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater, Verb Ballets, Dancing Wheels, Ohio Dance Theater and Opera Cleveland, as well as performing her solo works.

VerNooy will present a group dance that looks at the inevitable loss of innocence. VerNooy was a New York-based choreographer and actress for twenty years. Her movement theatre work has been presented at many New York venues, including Joyce Soho, Dance Theatre Workshop and Ensemble Studio Theatre. She is the founder of Movement Educator’s Research Group (MERG(e)) an experimental research group that includes Wendell Beavers, founder of Movement Research and New York University’s Experimental Theatre Wing, and four other prominent movement educators.

Geller will present a reconstruction of her ghostly and haunting 1989 duet, “Half-Unnamed Couple.” The score, by Cincinnati composer Billy Larkin, reflects the ethereal nature of the piece. Geller is the recipient of three Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships in Choreography and an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. Her work has been produced in New York City venues, several other U.S. venues, and in Japan, Finland and Spain.

Students Allison Brandon, Liz Conway, Steven Evans, Lauren Slivosky and Annie Scott will also present work at the concert.

Tickets are $8.00 and admission is free for OHIO students with a valid Ohio University student ID through Arts for Ohio. Tickets are available at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Auditorium ticket office at (740) 593-1780.
